Physical Education at Southrop
PE at Southrop
Physical Education is a key part of our curriculum at Southrop. Every child takes part in at least two hours of timetabled PE each week, with the option to join up to four additional hours of after-school sports clubs. These clubs are free to attend and open to all pupils.
For much of the year, our PE lessons take place at the spacious Jubilee Field in the village, providing an excellent environment for a wide range of sports and activities. When weather conditions prevent us from using the field, lessons are held on the school playground.
Our core PE offer is enriched through partnerships with specialist providers, including Chance to Shine, part of the England & Wales Cricket Board, who deliver high-quality cricket coaching to our pupils.
In addition, all children at Southrop take part in swimming lessons, developing essential water safety and swimming skills.
We are proud that Southrop was awarded the Gold School Games Achievement for 2024–2025, recognising our commitment to high-quality PE and sport.
At Southrop Primary School, we believe that high-quality physical education, delivered in a safe and supportive environment, is a vital part of every child’s development and well-being. Our broad and balanced PE curriculum is designed to help children build confidence in their ability to control and understand their bodies across a variety of movement activities.
We see physical education as a powerful area of learning where self-esteem, physical progression and positive attitudes are nurtured. PE offers every child the chance to succeed—whether through personal achievement or teamwork—and encourages them to challenge themselves in a supportive setting.
Physical education also plays an important role in promoting healthy lifestyle habits that children can carry with them into adulthood, helping them to value physical activity as part of their daily lives.

Alternative Sports
We are very keen for the children to experience alternative sports. Reception and Year 1 children are taking part in ‘Balanceability’, This is a programme designed to help children gain the confidence and skills required to ride a pedal bike independently. Year 2 and 3 children are participating in ‘Scooter Wise’, a programme which helps children ride a scooter safely so that they can enjoy the freedom and fun. Year 4, 5, and 6 are off to Far Peaks, a climbing centre just outside Northleach, taking part in NICAS level 1 programme. .
