Curriculum Statement 2020/21

We follow the National Curriculum from September 2014. This consists of ten subjects; three core subjects of English, Mathematics and Science, plus seven foundation subjects, being Design and Technology, Computing, Music, History, Art, Geography and PE. Religious Education is taught according to the Locally Agreed Syllabus for the Diocese of Gloucester. Personal Social Health Education (PSHE) and French are also taught. 

The National Curriculum document states:


“Every state-funded school must offer a curriculum which is balanced and broadly based1 and which:

  • promotes the spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development of pupils at the school and of society, and
  • prepares pupils at the school for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of later life. “


At this school we have for many years used a topic approach to teaching with a two year programme in the Cygnet class and a four year programme in the Swan class.  Our topics are similar in both the Cygnets and Swans to ensure a whole school approach in learning and progression is support throughout the childrens time at Southrop.
