Small, but successful and dynamic
We are a successful, dynamic, small village school with an excellent staff to pupil ratio. Our pupils are drawn from three counties – Gloucestershire, Oxfordshire and Wiltshire – and we are able to meet the needs of each child on an individual basis, a key factor that lies at the heart of our consistently strong academic record.
Whilst being proud of our results, we also recognise that primary education is more than just an academic experience. As important to us as academic success is the fact that our staff and children enjoy being at school; enjoyment, well-being, good behaviour and mutual respect feature heavily in the Southrop ethos and, as a result, our children feel happy and secure with us.
A rich extra-curricular offering
At Southrop, we have a huge focus on extra-curricular opportunity and enrichment because we recognise that enrichment and extra-curricular activities are vitally important for children’s social development.
Our small size doesn’t stop us putting on a whole host of clubs and always getting involved in inter-school events and competitions. Our children are thrilled to join in the same activities that children at much larger primaries take part in, from Young Voices (the largest school choir in the world) to sports competitions across the region.
We also run a busy programme of educational trips. Children regularly visit museums, wildlife parks, arboretums, theatres, exhibitions, nature reserves, and other places of interest.The highlight of the year for our oldest pupils is always the residential trip which currently alternates between a UK and a French destination.
Embedded in the community
We might be a small school but we have access to the village's fantastic facilities. PE and sport takes place on a village field that is held in trust for local use, while we are in the village hall on an almost daily basis, as well as using it to host performances and for other special events.
Our Reception children visit Forest School once a week – a large, enclosed area of woodland which the children can explore and where they grow flowers, herbs and vegetables.
We visit St Peter's Church regularly and have good links with local clergy. Pupils enjoy the beauty of the church and use it as a learning resource as well as a place of worship.
